Environmental Labelling
Environmental labelling is an umbrella term that describes the various means by which companies disclose information on their environmental activities.
Environmental labelling
The International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) has developed standards for three types of environmental labelling programs.
- Type I is a voluntary, multiple-criteria based, third party program developed for a specific product or products. Examples include the EU ecolabel, Blue angel, etc.
- Type II is for any written or spoken environmental statement or claim. There are no set criteria, manufacturers simply declare the information they wish to communicate about the environmental attributes of their products.
- Type III provides quantified environmental information about a product or service. This program provides a product profile rather than a verifiable claim or assurance. Examples include environmental product declarations (EPDs).
The table below presents an overview of the different labelling programs.
