Environmental Product Declarations

An EPD is an LCA based tool to communicate the environmental performance of a product or system, and is applicable worldwide for all interested companies and organizations.

Environmental product declarations

Certified Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are open for all products and services. There is no evaluation of the environmental information since no predetermined environmental performance levels are set. Instead it builds on well-structured and quantitative data certified by an independent third party. For an EPD the environmental performance of a product is based on two documents:

  • Product category rules (PCRs):  a set of specific rules, requirements and guidelines for a product category. If the relevant PCR does not exist for your product it has to be prepared and approved.
  • Product specific requirements: a set of product specific information based on the requirements of a PCR which can include a list of environmental impacts and material flows that must be included in the EPD document.
