Sustainability initiatives

PRé partners with several organizations whose mission and goal is to foster a more transparent and responsible business community for a sustainable future.

Life Cycle InitiativeLife Cycle Initiative

The Life Cycle Initiative, hosted by UN Environment, aims to disseminate life cycle thinking worldwide by enhancing global consensus, supporting research, and investing in capacity building in developing countries. PRé is a long-standing sponsor and also contributes to various activities of the Life Cycle Initiative such as the Global LCA Data network (GLAD) and the Global Guidance for LCIA Indicators.

European Commission’s Environmental Footprinting (EF) initiative

The European Commission’s Environmental Footprinting (EF) initiative, which is based on the Single Market for Green Products initiative, aims at overcoming problems that companies and consumers in the EU market face regarding environmental information.

PRé has been actively contributing to the initiative, served as a technical helpdesk of the pilot phase, assisting both the pilots and the Commission, reviewed 40 PEFCR supporting studies, contributed to the provision of EF-compliant secondary data, and worked on the remodelling project, coordinating the development of models for the representative products and organisations. PRé also supported UNIDO with PEF capability development in the Southern Mediterranean region.

Community-Driven Life Cycle Information (CDLCI)

Community-Driven Life Cycle Information (CDLCI) initiative started in 2018 with a sustainable purpose of facilitating the creation and distribution of high quality life cycle data for specific regions and sectors. PRé has taken the lead in this initiative bringing together domain expert consultants, data scientists, leading database providers, and open source developers.

European Commission – Joint Research Centre

The European Platform on LCA from Joint Research Centre (JRC) aims to contribute to the availability of LCA knowledge and the interoperability of activities among private and public stakeholders. The JRC has therefore established formal agreements with the organisations involved to help guide and facilitate its Life Cycle Management activities. The JRC regularly collaborates with PRé. For example, PRé developed an Ecomodelling Framework Tool and a robust inventory of environmental emissions and extractions in the EU between 1990 and 2010.

Social & Human Capital Protocol

Since 2013 PRé has been facilitating and organizing the Roundtable for Product Social Metrics, as well as actively engaging with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) projects on social impact assessment. The Social & Human Capital Coalition was established as an offspring of the WBCSD, and PRé is represented in the technical working group. A joined statement between the Roundtable and this coalition was signed emphasizing to collaboration and mutual support.

For UNEP, PRé surveyed retailers in different countries and conducted a comprehensive literature review about sustainability value chain management. Knowing what value chain management strategies retailers use helps guide improvement.
