Vacancy | LCA Data Scientist

Do you have experience at the intersection of LCA, programming and data science? Do you see the huge potential of scaling up the availability of Life Cycle Information? Do you want to play a leading role in that development?

June 08, 2020

At PRé we believe that we have to change the way Life Cycle Information is generated and made available. There are billions of products and only a few thousand LCA Experts. To leverage the knowledge and expertise that is captured in models and data we have to work smarter and use technology to its full potential. Making simplified tools is simply not enough. Easy to use tools that can generate results in huge volumes have to be connected to robust LCA calculation engines that ensure the underlying models are transparent and science-based. For that reason, we developed SimaPro as a cloud-based platform, so data can be connected and shared much more easily.

Data and models are pivotal in that development. Those are the backbone of the next generation LCA Infrastructure that will enable footprinting at an unprecedented scale. And that is where you come in! We are looking for a (senior) LCA Data Scientist that can drive this development and work with all actors in the Data ecosystem to solve some of the most pressing barriers in the advancement of LCA. To name a few: user-generated data, exchange of models between various software systems, metadata and nomenclature, data harvesting and interoperability. The next step will be to use technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence and big data to even further streamline the accessibility of data and models.

Does this sound like your next challenge? We are looking for an LCA Data Scientist, preferably starting on 1 September 2020.

Your tasks and responsibilities

As an LCA Data Scientist, you will lead a database team and be the linking pin between the database and other teams (Software, Marketing, Consultancy). You are responsible for taking our approach around data to the next level, but also for the data management of our LCI databases and the implementation of LCIA methods. Because we believe that all solutions have to be simple and pragmatic, the role will combine development and implementation tasks. To make sure that ideas will actually work in real life. All with the focus of bringing this into the future.

Main tasks and responsibilities are:

  • Lead the database development for SimaPro
  • Work on the development of our CDLCI (Community Driven Life Cycle Inventory) Initiative1
  • Manage the work of the database team for SimaPro updates
  • Provide input and interact with software development to optimize data management and exchange
  • Convert proposed ideas into concrete data/solutions

What you bring to the table

You are a very talented and ambitious self-starter that enjoys diving deep into models and data, designing innovative data management solutions and develop groundbreaking data-driven applications. You are creative and you have a conceptual mind. And you would like to contribute to a better world. You have:

  • A university degree in Analytical studies
  • Excellent knowledge of life cycle assessment, SimaPro and/or other LCA software
  • Experience with data formats, archetypes and architecture
  • Mastering Data Science
  • High level of experience using data tools (e.g. Excel, Matlab, NumPy, SQL, R, etc.)
  • Having programming skills is a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written English
  • EU citizen or work permit for the Netherlands
  • However, talent and mindset are more important than experience.

1The Community Driven Data Initiative - CDLCI: We now want to facilitate an environment that makes it attractive to develop and share Domain-Specific Databases. Our goal is to activate the LCA community to share and use data, to give control to original data developers and to provide attractive licensing and new business models for data providers. To facilitate this we want to create a core dataset of very high quality, with global reach and an agreed methodology and data quality guideline.
