Product Environmental Footprinting taking off

The methods of the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprinting (PEF) initiative are starting to be applied by companies and trade organisations who were not part of the extensive PEF pilot projects. This is great, since the broader the reach, the more effect the PEF methodology can have on transforming the way products are designed with the environment in mind. The next step is to make sure that any PEF category rules (PEFCRs) developed outside the PEF pilots also get their share of publicity.

Publishing Cosmetics Europe’s PEFCRs

Cosmetics Europe, a trade association for the cosmetics and personal care industry, approached PRé to help them publish an article about the PEFCRs for shampoo they developed. PRé has a long history of scientific publishing about sustainability metrics and has of course been very active in the PEF initiative. PRé led the drafting of the article, Cosmetics Europe provided a corresponding author, and the article was swiftly and successfully published.

Now, a larger audience will know about the shampoo PEFCR, allowing more companies to assess ways to make their products more sustainable. This publication will also increase scientific dialogue about PEF and PEFCRs, which may lead to more methodological improvements.
