Mitigating climate change towards disaster risk reduction

Climate change is often linked with long-term effects, such as: polar caps melting, disasters and rising sea level. This week, the Global platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is being hosted in Mexico, where countries will look at the progress made within the Sendai framework agreements. But how can the SDG agreements complement and help prevent disasters? We looked at SDG 13: Climate action, and how sustainability practitioners can help companies take action against climate change; using LCA metrics and indicators.

Climate Change, Global Warming and Disaster Risk reduction

Global warming and climate change are connected to some kind of environmental disaster in the long term. Of course, there are also consequences for the short term. Despite the ‘climate change denials’ the global community feels the urge to mitigate the risks and is starting to take action. Established in 2015 by the state members of the UN, the SDGs are a way to respond to the environmental depletion that we are experiencing, among other global issues. Although the moral commitment is there, meeting the Goals in practice is lagging, as shown in a recent report. According to the study, companies and national governments could be playing a greater rol in advancing progress. This week, the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is being hosted in Mexico, where countries will look at the progress made within the Sendai framework agreements.

Climate Change is often linked with long-term effects, such as: polar caps melting, disasters and rising sea level. However, there are other short term effects as well to be considered. Looking at both, the long-term and the short-term, reflects better the complexity of the situation and helps to set targets and track progress, this could be valuable also when working within a framework.

Sustainability is all about impact. Positive impact makes you meaningful. But first you have to know where you are making an impact and where you can create shared value. That’s where PRé comes in. Pinpointing your impact is an essential starting point for taking joint action with people and organisations in your ecosystem. The combination of sustainability and social business can make a real change in the way we do business.
