Developing Product Category Rules to gain transparency in the apparel sector
CASE STUDY | For apparel manufacturer Fristads, PRé took part in a Product Category Rules (PCR) Committee. The goal: to develop new PCRs to allow Fristads and other apparel companies to create Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for four categories of products. This helps level the playing field in the apparel sector, allowing companies to openly compete on sustainability. With EPDs, companies have transparent, verified and comparable information about the life cycle environmental impact of their products, which they can also communicate to their customers.
Comparative LCA study of traditional leather and Flyleather
CASE STUDY | If companies are looking into using an innovative, potentially more environmentally friendly material for their products, it is essential to find out how it performs, compared to the original solution. And if the performance is good, companies want to be able to use the environmental benefits in their marketing to win more customers. For shoe manufacturer Nike, PRé did an ISO-compliant LCA to assess the performance of traditional leather and the new material Flyleather. With this study in hand, Nike can now confidently communicate the benefits of Flyleather.
Applying PEF rules to construction products
CASE STUDY | In the construction sector, which widely adopted the EN 15804 standard, organisations are interested to see what the new Product Environmental Footprint standard will mean for the assessment of their products. For a trade organisation, PRé analysed three construction products according to the PEF method and compared the outcome to earlier EN 15804 studies. This provided valuable information about the products, but also about how the PEF standards look at products differently than an EN assessment.
Protecting the value of financial investments with sustainability assessments

Data Requirements In The PEF Approach
For an LCA study to be compliant with the ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, it needs to include the data quality requirements and a data quality analysis. A lot of LCA practitioners who provide these required elements don’t derive actual value from them, though. They often do it to tick all the boxes. But why is this? Interpretation of metrics: DALYs and damage to human health
One reason why we care about the environmental impact of our choices is that they affect human health. But how do you quantify that? The most commonly used metric is Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY), taking into account the years lost to premature death and expressing the reduced quality of life due to illness in years as well. How can you use this in life cycle assessment and what are the points of contention you should be aware of?
Hotspot analysis in the PEF approach
Although LCA is ideal for identifying all the hotspots within a product’s life cycle or an organization’s value chain, it did not provide clear guidance on how to select the most relevant ones.
