Just like production methods have positive or negative effects on the natural environment, they also have positive or negative effects on the health and well-being of people and communities. In today's fast-paced and transparent communications world, consumers are very aware of the social impacts of products and brands. This can be an advantage: brands can be rewarded by showing great social responsibility or achieving high scores on social impact metrics. But the life cycle of a product nowadays is complex and global, which means businesses also face many risks related to social impacts: if something goes wrong anywhere in the supply chain, use phase, or end of life stages of a product, consumers are quick to hold the brand responsible.

The innovative Product Social Impact Assessment methodology helps businesses assess their products’ social impacts from design to disposal; and it’s based on life cycle thinking. The method identifies social hotspots and improvement opportunities throughout the life cycle of a product, and does not just focus on the supply chain and managing risks. The method was developed based on international standards and consultations with researchers and industry experts, and thoroughly tested by the Roundtable participants.
